What You Should Know About Hair Loss

by Amanda Gamdana

Although perhaps not desirable, hair loss is quite normal. There are many reasons why a person can lose hair but the problem is extremely common an untold millions of people are affected by it worldwide. The medical term for hair loss is Alopecia. The most common type of hair loss in men is genetic; known as male pattern baldness, it affects close to 95 percent of males.

Some people only loss a small amount of hair and this is often down to a poor diet and is worth checking with you specialist. The reason for your condition may be at your work place if you deal with chemicals or cosmetics but some others may as a consequence of personal situations such as stress, mental tension or a hormonal imbalance. Permanent loss usually occurs when the hair follicles themselves are damaged. Most people believe that it is primarily men that suffer with the condition but women actually account for forty percent of sufferers in the USA alone.

Hair loss is in fact more common with women as they age but it is often caused by a thyroid problem. It is not just in America where four in every ten women will suffer from it because this is a global figure for women by the time they reach sixty. Pregnant women are sometimes susceptible to some hair loss often lasting until after the child is born. In America approximately thirty million women suffer from female pattern, hereditary baldness at some point in their lives.

A relatively new treatment is to surgically restore hair for sufferers of permanent hair loss. Hair follicles that are healthy and undamaged are taken from the scalp and transplanted to an area where the follicles have been damaged for whatever reason. Hair transplants have become the most popular form of hair restoration treatment for men with the entire procedure done under local anesthetic and on an out-patient basis. It is now possible for women to have hair transplants like men and is becoming increasingly popular for those women keen to hide scars from previous facelift surgery.

It is important to try and keep your appearance as close as possible to your original when having hair transplant therapy and not try to look like someone else. For a person planning on having hair transplant surgery, all current health issues must be cleared up before any treatment can commence.

While cosmetic surgery does include hair restoration as one of its sub-fields, this is a different form of cosmetic treatment available. If all other hair treatment therapies have failed then it’s possible that a surgical hair transplant might be the only permanent solution available for your hair loss condition.
