The Proper Yoga Clothes For Your Bikram Yoga Class

Assuming you have read my last foray into the yoga clothes article world, “What Yoga Clothes Should I Wear To A Bikram Yoga Class”, you’ll remember that I told you that Bikram Yoga is a sort of “hot house yoga”. Now I’d like to further delve into the concept that there may be particular types of yoga clothes that you’ll want to buy for your next Bikram Yoga class.

Yoga Pants You realize that there are a number of differing models of yoga pants. You can get those Capri styles that only go to just below the knee, or choose a full length model. Some people just prefer to wear Bermuda shorts which are O.K.

Then, of course, youll have to choose between flowing yoga pants and pairs that are more form fitting. The advantage to these are that your instructor can more easily see the lines of your body to tell if you are performing the postures correctly and, in turn, correct your pose accordingly.

The thing about the flowing yoga pants is that they are able to hide those areas of your body that you don’t want just anyone to see. Perhaps you are modest or feel you will look a lot better later.

Yoga Wear Tops I think you will find that choosing which yoga wear top to buy is very similar to buying those yoga pants. You still need to pick between tighter fitting or more loose and flowing garments. You might opt for a t-shirt style or even a tank top made of cotton or silk. I like to have an Om symbol on mine.

You’ll find an almost infinite supply of designs of your yoga wear top so it should be relatively easy to find something for your next Bikram yoga class.

Yoga Shoes I don’t know how many people even bother with yoga shoes. Most folks just prefer to practice in their bare feet. Even so, there are a number of shoes designed specifically for yoga practice. You may want something like this if you ever find yourself wanting to practice on some stony beach in the Caribbean.

I know people who like to wear those little cotton bottomed tai chi shoes. But you might want something with a little more support, like what Puma and Adidas make. These companies are very sympathetic to yoga types.

So, in closing, make sure that the yoga clothing you buy is fun, practical and comfortable and in the long run youre practice will improve dramatically!

Yoga Pants Obviously there are a number of different styles of yoga pants. There are ones with full length legs and some that go just below the knee, like Capri pants. Some people opt for wearing shorts instead, and this is fine.

Obviously you are going to have to choose between a more form fitting style and those flowing yoga pants that are so popular. The form fitting ones are great because they offer an opportunity for your instructor to be able to spot whether or not you are performing the poses right or not.

One good thing about flowing yoga pants is they have the capacity to hide those areas of your body that you don’t necessarily want everyone to see. Whether this is just modesty or you truly believe that you need to hide things, flowing yoga pants will help.

Yoga Wear Tops Choosing yoga wear tops is similar to choosing yoga pants in that you’ll want to look for those that are either form fitting or loose and flowing. You could choose a t-shirt style or a tank top made of linen or hemp, maybe with one of those “Om” symbols printed on to it, if that matches your style.

To sum it all up, buy your yoga clothes because YOU like them. Choose wisely something practical, down to earth and above all, comfortable. You’ll thank yourself for it.

Want A Quick And Easy Way To Buy Yoga Mats Online?

Sunday, June 21st, 2009
by Steve Estes

If you are looking for a way to buy cheap yoga mats I have to imagine that you already know what yoga is. But just in case here’s a short primer.

The ancient Indian system of exercise known as yoga uses certain body postures and deep breathing to stretch your body, whether you are lying, sitting or even standing up.

Even if you are looking to just buy cheap yoga mats (as opposed to the more expensive alternatives) they have to suit your own purposes. It absolutely must be comfortable or else all your practice will be useless. It makes breathing slowly into the postures that much easier.

So what do you look for in a quality yoga mat? Well, it must first of all be very sturdy. After all, you don’t want to have to make this purchase every year. Its like my father always told me-buy the best and you’ll never be disappointed.

Make absolutely sure that it offers you enough strength and durability to go along with that sturdiness. Every cheap yoga mat must be able to stop you from slipping around as you practice whatever yoga system you do in your studio or at home. You don’t want to risk the very real possibility of injury.

While you can probably spend upwards to fifty dollars for high quality yoga mats, somewhere between $10 and $50 should a comfortable range for you. Again, don’t skimp on this if you don’t have to.

You may have seen old pictures of famous masters sitting and doing their yoga on tiger skins or white deer skin pelts but these things are no longer available to the outside worls and are quite possibly endangered. Just look for fabrics like cotton, jute, or linen if you like to use natural fabrics. No point in continuing the destruction of these rare beasts. I assume you are like me on this subject.

When you are doing your own research on cheap yoga mats, look for materials that wont slip out from underneath you. You might look for something environmentally friendly and easily recyclable if it comes down to getting rid of it.

I like to get a yoga mat that is simple to wash as I tend to sweat a great deal when I practice Bikram yoga. You will find a number of offline and online locations for buying your mats, just look around before purchasing. Clearly the amount of dough you are going to shell out is up to you, just be sure to get the right model for you to insure your comfort.

How To Plan A Yoga Class

Thursday, June 18th, 2009
by Ana Paula Hernandez

Planning a yoga class can be a different process for every teacher. The two largest groups are teachers that like to go with the flow and really do not plan anything followed by teachers that plan every word and every sentence. It is fair to say that a yoga teachers experience typically dictates which group one falls into.

For me personally, my past 7 years of teaching experience has being a range of everything.

I remember developing a passion for the creation of flows and pose transitions right from the beginning. I spent countless hours preparing unique flows for every class I taught for me it was a pleasure discovering new ways of transitioning into asanas. It wasn’t just about planning the poses a - z either I was just as fascinated about coming up with new transition comments as I was planning the order of poses. 6 months and 12 classes per week later I was left with two full notebooks of flows I had put my full heart into.

Some times I would plan my class on a body part such as a hip opening class, while other times I liked to go with the morning Yang energy and do a very active class. For the evening classes I liked to create a relaxing flow that did not require much energy and focused more on restoring and relaxing the body.

In time, my range of classes became one of distinguishing style notes. In fact, many students seemed to look forward to what I had in store for them today.

So, based on my teaching experience to date, here is a list of 5 advices that I believe will help you when creating a yoga class.

* Its not about you: try to forget about yourself during the class. Remember you are a guide for the student; its not about showing off your flexibility or strength. Do not let the ego tempt you into teaching a complicated class so you can show your students how much you know or can do. This can be extremely intimidating for the students in the class.

* Have a Topic: maybe choose 3 deep Asanas for your class and work in a flow that will help the body to prepare for those postures. Example: if you choose to teach Camel, work in a warm up flow that will open the lower back, thigh muscles and shoulders.

* What happened on right side MUST happen on left side: Take in consideration that many of the Asanas you instruct for the right also require the left side. When preparing your flow take this in consideration so you wont run out of time or forget one side! If you are not cautious you can cause an imbalance in the body.

* Have time for everything: calculate in your flow time for centering, preparation for relaxation and relaxation itself. Nothing more stressful than seeing your clock and realizing you only have 10 minutes before the class ends, but only half your flow complete. For a 90 min or 75 min class, recommend blocking 5 minutes for centering, 5 minutes to prepare for relaxation and 10 min of full relaxation. Adjust your time accordingly for sorter classes.

* Morning and night classes: please remember that energy levels vary throughout the day. In the morning students are restored from a good night sleep and ready for a more active Yang class, while at night your students probably had a busy day and come to the studio tired. So your job is to restore them with a gentle relaxing class, perfect time to practice yin yoga.

I hope this help but the must important thing is to teach from your heart and try to keep it simple! Keep your self approachable for your students, remember we are all one!

Truth and Chi!

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
by Al Case

Chi, a mysterious energy which surrounds us, constructs us, is us, and…what is it? To understand what Chi is it is necessary to define exactly who and what we are. To define who we are it is necessary to analyze the shape of our true body.

The immediate body is the one you have which is typing the keyboard, playing the guitar, talking to friends and generally making use of the six senses. We are the eardrum and the eyeball and the throat and hair and toenails and everything in between that has organic sensation. We have fleshy existence and we journey about the planet in the pursuit of fleshy pleasures.

The body that is at the heart of our concern, however, is the body that is constructed of Chi. This is the body beyond the senses, and as far as we can perceive. Indeed, you often have to put aside concepts of the six senses to experience the larger body of yourself.

This brings us to the concept that if everything is our body, then what is this thing called Chi? Chi is the organic thing you have presence in, that thing you call a body, and everything else, too. It could be a wavelength, or an idea, it doesn’t really matter as long as we understand that it is.

Chi being understood, how do we control it? After all, we can move that finger or toe, why can’t we wave that tree or move that cloud, if they really are part of our true body? Why can’t we make it rain when we want, or stop that dangerous storm, or pull the plug on that stupid political party that keeps wasting our money/energy?

Well, for one thing, we can’t make our True Body work because we are not used to making it work. We are used to sitting around and watching TV and being made stupid by pills and letting our senses be lulled, and this includes any sense of our True Body, into unconsciousness. We can undo this fact by practicing a discipline and by refusing to engage in any kind of programming, and by refusing any type of programming that does not allow honest exchange.

What you must do is unbind your senses and look at your immediate body and excite your imagination and open yourself up to the idea of your True Body through a True discipline. You must use discipline to look at and analyze your immediate body until you know what it is, and so that you are not merely engaging in a scientific examination. You must open and expand your senses through a True Discipline until you step outside of your body, and thus experience the truth of your True Body.

If you are still unable to cork volcanos and cause Tsunamis at will, then you must understand that everybody else is also occupying the True Body that you are occupying. Thus, to make your True Body move, you must make everybody else stop taking pills and turn off their TVs stop freezing their unconscious hold on the True Body. You do this by helping them find a True Discipline that will awaken them and take them to a realization of the True Body.

How I Plan My Yoga Classes

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
by Ana Paula Hernandez

The process of planning a yoga class can be different for all teachers. With that said, I believe there are varying styles within two primary groups. Group 1 prepares by writing every pose and transition on paper or in digital form. Group 2 pretty much shows up at class, senses the energy and then plans the class on the fly.

Over the past seven years of teaching I have experienced a range of everything.

Right from the beginning, I remember developing a real passing for the creation of flows and transitions. Although it did not feel like it, I spent hundreds of hours prepping unique flows for every class I taught. I loved the process of it and thinking back now I would say it was part meditative. For me, it wasn’t just about the putting poses in an orderly progression it was just as important to come up with new ways of explaining transitions from one pose to the nest. Anyway, after six months and twelve classes per week I was left with two full notebooks of class plans I was very proud of.

Some times I would plan my class on a body part such as a hip opening class, while other times I liked to go with the morning Yang energy and do a very active class. For the evening classes I liked to create a relaxing flow that did not require much energy and focused more on restoring and relaxing the body.

Soon enough, the range and diversity of my flows became the distinguishing note of my classes. My students were curious and interested about what kind of class Ana will teach today and I remember them commenting during tea time: Ana something that I really like about your style is the fact that I never know what are you going to do next!

So, based on my teaching experience to date, here is a list of 5 advices that I believe will help you when creating a yoga class.

* Its not about you: try to forget about yourself during the class. Remember you are a guide for the student; its not about showing off your flexibility or strength. Chi is a mysterious energy which constructs us, surrounds us, is us, and…what is it? To understand what Chi is we must define exactly who and what we are. To define who and what we are it is necessary to analyze our True Body.

Your immediate body, the body you are currently in, plays the guitar the guitar and taps the keyboard and talks to friends and uses the six senses. You are the eyeball and the hair and the eardrum and toenails and throat and everything that is in between and which experiences organic sensation. You traverse the points of the planet and have existence, and pursue your pleasures of the flesh.

The body that we are concerned about, however, is the body that is built of Chi. This is the body which exists beyond the senses and into whatever distances we can perceive. Indeed, perceptions through the six senses have to be put aside if you wish to experience the larger body of yourself.

Well, for one thing, we haven’t used out True Body much, and therefore we are not used to making it work. We are used to being lazy and programming ourselves with TV and taking pills to be stupid and letting our senses our senses be lulled, and this includes any sense of our True Body. We can reverse this trend by taking up a discipline and by throwing out the TV and the pills, and by refusing to engage in any type of programming that does not allow honest exchange.
