Healthy Carbs For Healthy Eating

Friday, June 26th, 2009
by James Zane Johnson

If you need to lose weight or want to combat diabetes, heart disease, and a whole host of other health problems that come from eating poorly, then there are some secrets you need to know. Healthy eating is not as complicated or difficult as you may think. In fact, it is a comfortable way to live if you do it correctly.

The biggest secret is to never put too much restriction on your life. There are no “bad foods” and you should never tell yourself you can never have something for the rest of your life. Instead, start tweaking your thoughts so you mentally support a new way of eating.

Here are three key secrets to turning your diet (and your health) around.

Attitude: This has to be the first secret revealed because it is the most important. How you mentally approach your new lifestyle is going to determine whether you really adopt a healthy eating pattern or fall quickly back into the unhealthy habits.

For starters, you are not going on a diet. You are just making better decisions. Better eating choices will bring about the healthier body that you desire but it is not about giving up the cookies or depriving yourself of everything you love.

Carb Control: You could spend months reading through books aimed at teaching you the hundreds of nutrients your body needs every single day and the proper combination of foods in order to get them in the right amounts. Yet, that is unnecessary if you can learn how to control your carb choices.

You never want to eliminate or severely restrict you carbohydrates as your body needs them for energy. Yet, if you can control which type of carbs you eat then you will get your diet in control as a whole.

All of these things are carbohydrates: cake, cookies, refined pasta, whole grain bread, fresh fruit, and vegetables.

The secret is to start replacing the sugary foods and refined carbs with whole grain varieties. Start eating fresh fruit in the place of sweet treats. Go for whole grain rice, pasta, and bread. Eat vegetables and fruit with every meal.

You aren’t looking to eliminate carbs because they are your body’s main source of energy and stamina. You just want to eat healthy carbs that deliver real value to your body.

To make better carb choices, check the Glycemic Index.

Snack Attack: You have to eat often to prevent your blood sugar and your metabolism from crashing. This means finding sensible snacks that will give your body energy throughout the day, rather than robbing it of energy.

Try to get something in your system every 3-4 hours. It may just be a piece of fruit or some nuts and carrots, but it will help you feel satisfied and energetic all day.

Healthy eating is about a well rounded life. Think moderation rather than deprivation. You should find yourself consuming lean meats and a variety of healthy carbs on a daily basis and then indulging in your favorite unhealthy foods when the time is right.

Pepper your life with those unhealthy foods and truly enjoy them, rather than saturating your daily diet with them and feeling guilty over every bite.

Explanations And Results Of Nighttime Snoring

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
by Juergen Schulze

Snoring is an issue that persons have managed with for a long time. It is oftentimes a little more stressful for a mate or loved one than it is for the people suffering the nighttime snoring. Even though snoring generally is extremely frequent, claiming more than fourty percent of men and 30% of the female population, its not damaging by itself. It might be quite the weight though, and the problem isn’t an issue to be unmarked.

Nighttime snoring is induced by the shaking of bodily tissues in a person’s neck and mouth. It’s most commonly the outcome of a clogged air passageway. During the time a an individual falls asleep, this same tissue in the neck might over-relax, causing a constricting of the air passageway. The wind that goes throughout the closing canal will result in shaking. These shakes make sounds which is what persons listen to in the process of the night.

Occasionally genetic traits, advanced aging, or sinus problems might force a an individual to start snoring. Children, however not immune, have shown a significantly smaller appearance of snoring than grownups. Persons who are fat have a higher risk of snoring because of the pressure that their throats must put up with. Furthermore, people who drink alcohol a lot, smoke cigarettes, or take sleep pills will usually snore because their throats get relaxed too much while they fall into a very deep sleep.

Numerous relieves, both over the counter and through prescription, are on the market. A remedy as simplistic and promptly available as a nose strip worn throughout the night might vastly help the situation because the strip gently opens the nasal canal from the outside of the face. Some surgical cures are also accessible after consulting with a physician. These surgeries should be seen as a last answer as they may be very expensive and are related with surgical risks.

There are many of dangers taken when nighttime snoring troubles are dismissed for too many months. Quick weight loss, sudden depression or falling asleep during the daytime are signs that there might be a worse medical issue. Nocturnal snoring could really be a symptom of a much more serious medical problem, including sleep apnea, which might cause elevated blood pressure, cardiac issues, or possibly stroke if left alone. The most important thing to do at any rate is to visit a medical doctor about the problem and get the nocturnal snoring fixed as promptly as possible.

Being Meticulous When It Comes To Nutrition and Health

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
by Benedict Perez

One of the most talks about issues that concern the general public is nutrition and health. The relationship between the two subjects suggests their interdependence on one another. If proper nutrition cannot be achieved, there would be a lot of problems in regards to the general health. But to achieve this is not an easy task. The world is a formidable force to reckon with, being in a time of high consumerism and a propagating all-you-can-eat concept staying in shape or in relative good health is not a common cliche anymore.

The only way to achieve good health is through proper nutrition. Now, how does one acquire good nutrition? There are certainly a lot of ways and one sure example is to have a good balance diet program. Having a balance diet means eating only recommended amounts of the various food groups identified. This means a diet should consist of meat, fruits and vegetables, carbohydrate-rich foods, and some fats. Although its clearly been a laid out plan, following it is harder than it seems. Especially in our world where the concept of fast foods have invaded our kitchens, sometimes it is easier to just to eat fast in order to keep up with this fast-paced world than to eat while manifesting the concept of nutrition and health.

The issues of nutrition and health have always been one of the primary concerns that governments have to face and they do so by making sure that information reaches the general public and by promoting the manufacturing of fortified and enriched food.

Just remember that good nutrition fosters good and healthy living. That it is only with good health that one can enjoy and explore the great possibilities in life. Without it a chance for learning better new things will be lost and wasted, and the option of living a full and joyful life will be diminished.

For in order to make use of all the information and all the advice about good food, meal, diet, and the like, discipline and constant vigilance to one’s self must be manifested. Meaning only when a determined, resolved conviction exist can nutrition and health be realized.

Egg Production and Distribution

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

Birds and eggs have existed since before Man and the first recorded history of domesticated wild fowl were found in East Indian history as early as 3200 BC. Records show domesticated hens throughout history but it has been believed that Columbus, on his second trip to the Americas in 1493, brought with him the ancestors of the chickens we see today. There are close to 200 breeds and varieties of chickens worldwide, but the most common laying hen is the Single Comb White Leghorn.

Over the centuries, the processes used for egg production and distribution have changed and improved drastically. The process is broken down into seven basic steps, with some of the steps containing more detailed work within them:

Laying: The hens need to have well balanced and nutritious meals in order to be good egg producers. Their diet plan is researched on a constant basis to ensure the best diet is given as much as possible. They have free access to fresh water and the food is distributed by computer controlled feeders. The more modern hen houses are computer controlled with the temperature, humidity, and ventilation systems all run by means of these computers. The lighting too is on a timed system since light seems to be what triggers the hens to lay the eggs. The highest and most common egg laying happens between 7 and 11 am. The cages are raised off the floor so that waste can drop out of the cage and to keep air flow open to the floor of the cage which prevents sores from forming on the hens feet or bodies, as well as keeping various diseases at bay.

Collecting: In most instances, collection is performed by the eggs automatically dropping onto a conveyor belt, below the hens cages. They travel along this belt to the washing station.

Washing: The eggs need to be cleaned and sanitized by washing them with a special cleaning solution and water that is more than 100 F or 38 C. Once washed, they are then rotated past 16 individual cameras, which inspect them for any remaining dirt spots. If spots are found, the egg returns back to the beginning of the process to be re-washed. Once the washing has been completed, the eggs are sent to be graded according to size, and weight.

Packing: Machines automatically place the eggs in separate sections; lining them up in accordance to the grade they have been given. To lessen the chance of breakage during shipping, the eggs are placed in foam or fiber cartons. The cartons are labeled appropriately and a “best before” date is printed on the carton as a guide for the consumer. Each carton is then packed into boxes for later shipping.

Cooling: The boxes of eggs are then placed in a climate controlled warehouse for storage until they are shipped out. The eggs are stored at 45 F or 7 C to maintain the egg quality. When they are ready for shipping, the boxes are loaded into refrigeration trucks to keep the temperature at the same level. Once shipped and in the stores, the grocer also maintains the temperature of the cartons by keeping them in a refrigerated unit until they are sold.

In Canada, there are approximately 1050 egg producers in operation, all following these procedures. In comparison, there are about 280 million producers in the United States and just one of them can produce as many eggs as all those found in Canada.

Eggs were once seen as a springtime food because of many of the older Easter traditions, but now they have become more versatile and a mainstay of most meal plans.

Massage Therapy Training - What Does It Take?

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

Massage therapy is growing in popularity because of the many health benefits that it contains. However, we the realization of the benefits is not something that is recent. As a matter of fact, massage therapy has been used for approximately 2,400 years. It was actually Hippocrates who noted that friction has certain health benefits. In modern times, massage therapy is being used for treating tired muscles, reducing stress, taking care of painful ailments, and even in physical therapy as a tool to rehabilitate after an injury.

The massage therapist massages the soft tissues of the body in order to improve circulation. This improvement in circulation removes waste from the muscles. Anytime there is any sort of waste product in the muscle, the muscle doesnt work properly. Administering massage therapy does take a special type of training, which is not hard to acquire.

The Training

There are almost 2,000 massage therapy programs within the United States today. They exist within post secondary schools and in colleges. There are many career centers that offer massage therapy courses. Students can acquire financial aid to take the classes or they can pay out of their pocket. The cost of the class is usually not as much as your traditional college course. This is because massage therapy programs do not last as long. There are some programs which last as little as 10 months to a year. The focus is just on massage therapy and the curriculum that is required to prepare for it.

The curriculum includes learning anatomy, the organs and tissues, and the physiology of the body. Massage therapists also learn business ethics and they study body mechanics and motion.

Learning massage therapy is also very hands on. In order to properly learn the techniques, the student must practice frequently. This is usually done with their fellow students before taking their newly learned techniques on the road. Many massage therapy schools will take their students to sporting events, such as marathons, to give massages to the marathon runners at the end of the event. This helps speed up muscle repair and makes the runner feel much better.

What does it take?

Now that you know that finding a school is easy and that getting in is fairly easy, you simply have to have a drive to learn. As stated before, the classes do not last that long. This means you have to learn a lot in a short period of time. With the proper motivation, you can do that.

In the end, you do have to take the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. This is an exam given by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork and they do have their own criteria that must be met.

There are several areas that are covered by this exam. They are: kinesiology and physiology, pathology, therapeutic massage assessment and application, anatomy, ethics, professional standards, and legal and business practices.

Once this exam is passed, you can run with the world. This is because you can be employed within a chiropractors office, a fitness club, another type of doctors office, or you can have your own business. If you can acquire your own massage therapy equipment, then you will make the highest salary by having your own business. This is because people will pay a lot of money for a quality massage.

So if you don’t think you have what it takes, know that you are wrong because you do. Find a school, enroll for the class, take the class, take the exam, and then decide what it is you want to do from there. There are many career possibilities, so run with them.

How Can You Tell if a Contact Lens Is Inside Out?

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
by Amy Nutt

Whether you are a new contact lens wearer or you have been using them for years to correct your vision, you may be wondering how can you tell if a contact lens is inside out. If you suspect you may be wearing your contact lenses incorrectly or they just feel uncomfortable, here are some ways you can determine this to avoid the problem in the future.

Look at the Lens

Before placing the lens in your eye, hold it on the tip of your index finger and look at it carefully from the side. Is it shaped like the letter “U” or it is flared on the sides, like a soup bowl? The correct shape of a soft contact lens should be like the letter “U”. If its shaped like a soup bowl, then its inside out. Some people also recommend the “taco test” whereby you gently squeeze the lens so that the edges touch. If they touch completely, then the lens is right side out. If the edges flare out and dont touch fully, then its inside out. Simply flip the lens around and it will be positioned correctly for wearing.

Another way to determine if your contact lens is right side out is to look at it from the top. This is especially important if you are wearing the colored enhanced type. The edge of a tinted lens will be look very blue. If it looks greenish, then it is inverted and you should carefully flip the lens around in order to wear it properly.

Find the Engraving

Some contact lenses have factory engraving on them, done by special lasers. This can include the manufacturer information, model number, brand name or grade of materials used. While this is not detected by the human eye when wearing, it can be of help when trying to determine if you are wearing your contact lenses correctly. Some brands have a “1-2-3″ engraved on them, so you would make sure this is the side facing downwards on your finger as you place the contact into your eye. If you can read this label, then the lens is inside out. You can remove it safely without damaging your eyes and flip it around for replacement.

Ask the Professional

Of course, please check with your eye doctor if you experience any discomfort with your contacts. They can often help you more with this perplexing problem or demonstrate to you further what to do. Common sense should tell you if you are wearing your contact lens incorrectly. If they feel uncomfortable or you feel slight pressure on your eyes, its probably because you have placed the lenses incorrectly on your eyes. You may want to practice a little when first getting a new set of contact lenses to see what works best for you and to get used to the feel of them. Once you do, you should enjoy months of enjoyable experience with your new lenses.

Wii Console Has New Must-Have Features

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
by Sue Calhoun

The Wii console is everywhere now, many people have purchased the Nintendo Wii for their families or to play with their friends. The Wii Fit helped bring the console to many more users than if it were only a gaming console. So what’s next for the Nintendo Wii game system?

Nintendo has just released some new features, accessories and game titles. For example, the biggest release in May 2009 has been the Wii Motion Plus. This is an accessory that is added onto the motion-sensitive controller, but increases the sensitivity of motion that can be achieved with the controller. By fine tuning the motion, players can excel at new sports and challenges. A new version of Wii Sports is being released as well, that uses the new MotionPlus accessory, called Wii Sports Resort.

There is also a new sports bundle available using the new Sports Resort game and including the MotionPlus. Many of the new games are bundled with a console, since new users may not have purchased the console yet, but are motivated to do so with the new game releases.

A new feature that Nintendo has in development is called the “vitality sensor”, a small fingertip sensor that clips on and uses a light sensor to read bio rhythms. This neat little item has the potential to measure brain waves, and give users a biofeedback experience. (Can you imagine a “meditation” game that teaches users to meditate?) This can help with teaching users how to focus, improve attention and other benefits. This is a feature which may be released in 2010.

Nintendo keeps attracting plenty of non-gamers to its console, with new games and fun for anyone, not just gamers. The perfect example is the Wii Fit which was huge for Nintendo, and helps anyone of any age start and maintain a fitness program using the balance board to work out, track progress, and build workout routines.

Nintendo and its game partners are releasing more sports games too, which means Wii Sports bundles will have great options for games and accessories. Two new ones are Virtua Tennis from Sega and Grand Slam Tennis from EA Sports. Grand Slam Tennis takes advantage of the new MotionPlus.

One new sports release, EA Sports Active, gives users a much more active experience, with a sensor pad attachment that wraps around your leg and tracks body movements like running and kicking. These types of new games and accessories will keep the Wii console at the top of the heap for a while.
