What are Mesothelioma Statistics?

Thursday, June 11th, 2009
by Lelouch Parkman

Mesothelioma statistics show relevant data about this lethal disease. It develops in the lungs, heart and the abdomen, Pleural (of the lungs) is the most common of this disease. There are cases though that the reproductive organs may be affected. Little time is left for the patient if he is diagnosed with this cancer, one to two years.

What have Mesothelioma Statistical Data|Statistics Shown?

Mesothelioma statistics have revealed that more than seventy percent of all cases of mesothelioma have been directly linked to prolonged asbestos exposure. Asbestos was a frequently used material in railroads, constructions, factories, shipyards and automobile industries. Mesothelioma statistics were able to highlight the link between asbestos and cancer more than sixty years ago. However, unprincipled companies have chosen to continue using asbestos for profit motives.

Another statistical revelation is that mesothelioma has characteristics of being a silent killer. The disease can lie dormant for decades without any signs of it. Almost always it is diagnosed when it is in its advanced stage and when the patient’s age is between fifty to seventy. During this time, survival comes to a glimmer and very little hope can be expected.

Statistics Regarding Mesothelioma Treatment:

Sad as it may seem but no cure has been found for mesothelioma. The statistics shoe that when the time comes that mesothelioma is diagnosed, only 12 to 24 months remain in the victims life. The survival rate cannot be extended to five years even though it is detected and treated earlier. Up to eight thousand dollars can be spent with mesothelioma treatments. It is really quite expensive that is why lawsuits are usually filed by mesothelioma patients to cover the medical and other related costs relating to this awful disease.

What Are The Things That The Statistics Does Not Reveal?

Mesothelioma statistics show only the number of patients who have already been diagnosed with this cancer. This number is between two to three thousand new cases every year. However, statistics is not able to reveal or anticipate the number of people who continue to slowly develop the cancer inside them. There is no statistical data to provide the probable number of mesothelioma patients in the coming future.

How Can This Statistical Data Be of Help?

Mesothelioma patients can be eligible compensation through government regulations. Information about the disease can be gathered as reference for lawyers for legal compensation and claims. These statistics can be quite helpful to help the patients win over the lawsuit and claim compensation to cover the expenses in treating this disease.

Effects And The Symptoms Of Colon Cancer

Monday, June 8th, 2009
by Mike Taylor

One of the many aggressive and disastrous forms of cancer is neuroendocrine carcinoma of colon. The worst part of this disease is that it is usually detected in it’s late stages at which time it is more difficult to make treatments.

As the symptoms of neuroendocrine colon cancer become visible only in the most advanced stages the rate of survival of the patient diminishes. The tumors are always malignant, and mostly detected with distant metastases. Most recent surveys show that reports tell us that in almost all cases of neuroendocrine cancer end with the death of the patient.

Though the possibilities of neuroendocrine carcinoma in colon are very rare, if unfortunately one is affected by this disease, the health of the patient becomes worse than patients who suffer from adenocarcinoma.

Research reveals that the end results surrounding this form of cancer do not differ with age, sex or tumor location. Though neuroendocrine colon carcinoma depends on which stage the tumor is in Standard cases have revealed that people in stage 1 and 2 of cancer usually do not suffer from neuroendocrine colon cancer. But alternately in several cases, if said tumor is in stage 3 or 4, it is a laborious and hard task the neuroendocrine colon carcinoma.

Unfortunately, medical science has few techniques to help patients with this cancer. Among the more popular methods that doctors regularly use is immunohistochemical staining methods. a method which greatly helps doctors with coping with the seriousness of neuroendocrine colon cancer and assists doctors in deciding on the most helpful medication and a treatment for it. Immunohistochemical staining methods is specifically used for neuroendocrine markers. It involves the staining the tumor with a monoclonal antibody A-80 which helps in identifying the quantum of neuroendocrine differentiation and the extent of damage on the patient’s health.

Neuroendocrine colon carcinoma is difficult to treat and in a certain study in which a number of patients suffered from this particular disease underwent examination and, it was noted that the overall survival rate for this disease was only about seven months. In the later stages these rates decrease, to as low as five months or less. The great majority of these cases were originally seen as carcinoids but they later developed in to neuroendocrine colon carcinoma. Neuroendocrine colon cancer does not have a good prognosis and surgery is not always a perfect or even viable treatment so surgery may not provide a satisfactory cure. Therefore it becomes necessary to notice the presence of this disease quickly and prescribe the right medication.

Colon Cleanse Supplements - What Works Best

Sunday, June 7th, 2009
by Kym Butterworth

There are more people than ever taking advantage of the health benefits that can come from colon cleansing. As a result, there are also more products than ever being sold to help everyone achieve their goals. Before you go out and purchase the first product you see, take a moment to consider all of your options and select the one that fits into your lifestyle best.

Pills for this purpose are sold everywhere and almost everyone is aware of them. Yet, most people do not realize they are not the only option. Actually, for many people they may not even be the best option.

There is one important decision that you have to make first. You can purchase something to use at home or you can go through your doctor and request a colonoscopy, which is a medical procedure that will do the job for you.

If you go to your doctor you have the professional expertise of their medical education at your disposal. Yet, you will also pay a lot more for the procedure and it is more invasive than just doing it at home yourself.

The majority of people are going to elect to find a product that can be taken at home at less expense. Your choice at that point becomes whether to go with a pill or capsule supplement since they are so readily available, or look for another form.

Pills that cleanse the colon or even every organ in the whole body are widely available and easy to purchase. They can also be very affordable even when purchased a kit with more than one type of pill involved. The question is whether you can remember to take them at certain times of the day and if you can handle swallowing larger sized pills or capsules. If that is not a problem, then look for a product with natural ingredients.

There are many different colon cleansing alternatives for those who cannot remember to take a pill at key times or cannot handle swallowing them down.

Teas are probably the second popular form. They are preferable to anyone who will have an issue with swallowing pills which can sometimes be quite large, though you will still have to remember to drink the tea more than once a day for most products to work.

Tea tastes great and can become a relaxing, enjoyable part of your day. If you already drink this on a regular basis then it may be the best choice as it will be natural to work it in.

If you have to have immediate rewards, then an enema product could be your ideal route. This is more invasive and most people will cringe at the though of using them, but if used cautiously and not abused they can deliver more immediate results.

Whatever type of product you choose, you can keep the benefits long term by adding more fiber rich foods into your daily diet, taking fiber supplements, or even taking a psyllium husk supplement before bed each night.

Ultimately, colon cleansing is more effective if it is taken in a form that fits into your daily life. You have to do it according to the directions in order to get all of the health and weight loss benefits.

Treatment for Angiosarcoma

Sunday, June 7th, 2009
by Roger Skarmore

Angiosarcoma is a rare but extremely insidious type of cancer. The tumors grow and spread rapidly but not easily detected. When symptoms appear, the disease is typically well in the advanced stage. When diagnosis is delayed, treatment for angiosarcoma is usually late and ineffective.

Common treatments include:

*Chemotherapy

*Radiation Therapy

*Surgery

Angiosarcomas are rare tumors, all malignant and invasive, that begin on the cells that make the linings of the blood vessels. The cancer is characterized by rapid proliferation and wide infiltration; where tumors may occur in any organ of the body (breast, liver, spleen, heart, and bone). Frequently found in the skin and soft tissue, tumors on the head and neck are called Cutaneous Angiosarcoma.

Surgical resection is the usual primary treatment for angiosarcoma because the disease is aggressive and known to recur locally. Defining tumor-free margins of the tumor is always difficult at the cellular level, because numerous and irregular vascular channels are not easily detected. Due to this unique behavior of the tumor growth, post-operative radiotherapy is beneficial when added to a radical surgery. Survival rate is improved with this combination but radiotherapy is not often used as primary treatment.

Chemotherapy (or chemo-radiation) is generally used as treatment for angiosarcoma patients who cannot undergo surgical procedures. Directly on the site of the tumor growth, chemotherapy drugs are injected as method of treatment. A combination of the three methods is often recommended but the best sequence is yet to discover; so each treatment is performed individually. Before surgery, careful planning for both diagnostic and surgical is crucial.

These treatment options, even when aggressive, are not effective if the tumor is diagnosed in its more advanced stage. Prognosis, therefore, is often poor.

There are drugs, known as angiogenesis inhibitors, being used to prevent new blood vessels from forming to stop tumor growth. Both Paclitaxel and Sorafenib are now being used with treatment for angiosarcoma. Paclitaxel has shown good results for treating the disease on the scalp and face. In the near future, a tumor suppressor gene, called P53, may also be available as treatment.

What is Myelodysplastic Syndrome?

Sunday, June 7th, 2009
by Rachel Mansheny

Myelodysplastic syndrome is a condition that affects the bone marrow. While this is not a form of cancer, it can lead in that direction. Here are some facts about myelodysplastic disorder including what it does and who is affected.

The bone marrow is responsible for the production of millions of new and healthy blood cells everyday. This task is very important so that a balance between the old and the new blood cells in the bloodstream. With myelodysplastic syndrome, the bone marrow becomes erratic and unreliable. Stem cells (or blast cells) do not mature and develop properly into any of the three blood cells”white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells. Most blood cells die even before and right after leaving the bone marrow.

Myelodysplastic Syndrome Symptoms

Myelodysplastic syndrome is a condition that can lead to cancer. Some people can have MDS but still able to live normally without showing any signs of the illness. In many cases, MDS is often undetected because the symptoms resemble those of other diseases. Common symptoms include: fatigue, anemia, infections, nausea, bruising, and bleeding.

Who Can Get Inflicted with Myelodysplastic Syndrome?

Most victims of MDS are found in people over 50 years of age. It is seldom found in children or young adults. More men than women tend to get the disease.

Patients who have undergone cancer treatments can get MDS as one of the long-term side effects from high doses of chemotherapy drugs and radiation. Potent drugs are toxic to the bone marrow. Secondary MDS is difficult to treat even when the cause is identified.

People exposed to large amount of harmful chemicals have high risk of developing MDS eventually. Benzene is a known industrial chemical often found in gasoline, furniture polish, rubber plastics, and cigarette smoke.

Treatments for MDS

The bone marrow transplant is the only treatment method that has shown success in providing permanent cure in about 20 to 40 percent of all MDS cases. The candidate patient must not be over the age of 60 and must also be in a very good state of health.

Supportive care is may be the only option offered. Supportive care includes: blood transfusions and drug therapies. More treatment options are getting developed to help improve the quality of life of MDS patients. Chemotherapy and stem cell transplants can also be included in the course of treatment.

Myelodysplastic Syndrome: What is it?

Saturday, June 6th, 2009
by Rachel Mansheny

Myelodysplastic syndrome (or MDS) is a group of diseases that disrupts the normal production of blood cells in the bone marrow. With MDS, the bone marrow is over-active but the numbers of normal blood cells released in the blood stream are reduced.

Bone marrow produces stem cells that will eventually mature and develop into any of the three types of blood cells, namely: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The disease will cause these blood cells die while still inside the bone marrow and while entering the blood stream. The end result will be abnormally low levels of all types of blood cells circulating in the body.

MDS is seldom seen in children or young adults. Typically, the victims of MDS are 50 years old or older and more men get the illness than women.

Cancer treatments like chemotherapy are known to lead to secondary MDS. High doses of chemo drugs are toxin to the bone marrow. Environmental toxins are linked to MDS cases with unidentified causes.

Classified as unidentified cause, prolonged exposure to harmful chemicals like benzene is linked to development of MDS. Benzene is present in gasoline, furniture polish, cigarette smoke, and even in ground water from deep wells.

What are the Treatment Methods for MDS?

The bone marrow transplant is the only treatment method that has shown success in providing permanent cure in about 20 to 40 percent of all MDS cases. The candidate patient must not be over the age of 60 and must also be in a very good state of health.

by Samantha Katherine

While modern medicine has continued to improve standard surgical techniques to treat prostate cancers, these also has been a growing body of research into alternative prostate cancer treatments which may provide effective options at a lower financial commitment and risk. Treatment for prostate cancer may vary according to the stage of the cancer. The procedure involves a gloved finger in the rectum for a measurement of the size of the gland and feel for possible prostate tumor (nodule) cancer.

Each year approximately 186,000 men in the United States will receive the diagnosis that they have prostate cancer and, in a bid to beat the second leading cancer that kills men, will begin looking for more information on this life threatening but treatable disease. If searching the Internet, be sure that you check out several different sites.

However once the cancer has been successfully treated, the side-effects of treatment can have a major impact on quality of life. Yet frequently, at the time of diagnosis, these patients did not view impotence as a major concern when they made their choice of treatment. This has been understood to be the safest way of eradicating cancer but causes impotency.

This cancer like many can be life threatening as well as very damaging. More so, older men should be concerned about developing prostate cancer, although it does affect young men as well. However, this procedure does take your ability to perform, which leaves many with psychological problems. Herbal treatment for prostate cancer has offered an alternative for people suffering from prostate cancer.

An Introduction to Appendicitis

Saturday, June 6th, 2009
by Angkoon Anuwong

The appendix has always been viewed as a strange organ since it serves no purpose, and nobody knows what its function is. Unfortunately, the appendix can become inflamed and in serious cases can be fatal.

The appendix is an organ shaped like a finger, located on the lower right side of the abdomen. There are ideas as to what it may have been for, though nobody knows for sure. The truth is that humans can easily live without this organ, and it is removed in a number of cases where the organ becomes inflamed.

Appendicitis is the specific name for when the appendix becomes inflamed and filled with pus. Anyone can develop appendicitis, though it is more common from the ages of 10 to 30.

When appendicitis develops it requires urgent medical attention. People who have the condition will require a surgical procedure to remove the organ, and there is no alternative treatment available. It is extremely important to seek treatment, since perforation or bursting of the organ can lead to death.

Appendicitis can be caused for a number of reasons, usually when the organ has been blocked by foreign bodies or by bodily waste. It may also be a sign or a complication of cancer, or caused by an infection in the body.

Symptoms of Appendicitis

The first sign that you may have appendicitis is a feeling of pain in the area around your navel. This pain may chance extremely quickly, and move onto the lower right side of your abdomen. The pain increases in intensity, and most sufferers will feel a sharp change between 6 and 12 hours of the initial pain.

There are a number of other symptoms associated with appendicitis, including nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal swelling, back pain, vomiting and more. Those with the condition will not usually experience all of these symptoms.

Treatment of Appendicitis

If you have appendicitis it may be difficult to diagnose. This is because symptoms are often vague and non-localized. They are often confused with symptoms of other illness, which could include gastritis and urinary tract infections.

It is important to seek prompt medical attention if you experience any of the symptoms of appendicitis.

If you ever suffer from abdominal pain that quickly gets worse, or you may have one or more of the symptoms listed above, then you should try to seek medical attention as soon as possible. It is recommended that you stop eating or drinking and avoid taking pain killers and antacids. You should also avoid the use of any heating pads to help the pain, as this can actually cause the appendix to burst. It is vital that you seek fast medical attention and visit the emergency room as soon as you can if you feel you may have appendicitis.
