Our New Economy demands an entrepreneurial spirit.

It used to be that employers didn’t want entrepreneurs working for them. They were afraid the entrepreneurial type would leave after being trained up-perhaps even become a competitor.

Today, progressive employers want entrepreneurs on their staff. They might not refer to them as entrepreneurs, but that’s what they are.

I call them intrepreneurs-men and women who harbor the entrepreneurial spirit while working in a larger organization.

As more and more good people leave the W-2 world to become free agents, talent, ambition and experience will be that much more in demand. The wise employer will encourage an independent entrepreneurial spirit.

The employer of the next century will look for ways to attract and nurture their existence. He or she will set up win-win relationships that allow for independent contracts.

What we really want to do is treat our job like it was our own business. In doing so, we maximize our value to our employer and at the same time maximize our individual value.

What are some of the qualities of an entrepreneur? Here are a few:

Vision. An entrepreneur sees what is not yet there. They have the ability to envision something different, something better.

Creativity. Someone with an entrepreneurial mind is innovative. They can take circumstances or pieces of information and reorder them to make something completely different.

Persistence. Entrepreneurs are self-starters. They don’t need a lot of supervision or much structure. They have stick-to-it-iveness. They work hard and get things done.

Resilience. Entrepreneurs are resilient. They get back up after being knocked down. Entrepreneurs aren’t easily discouraged and they don’t quit.

Goal Setting. Entrepreneurs know the principles of goal setting. They have measurable objectives, are clear on what they want, determine the obstacles to getting there and have a plan of action to accomplish their goals.

Passion. An entrepreneur loves what they do, and the quality of their work shows it. They have passion for their industry, their business and their projects.

Change. The entrepreneurial type leverages change. They seem to thrive on chaos. And turmoil will continue to be the norm.

Enthusiasm. A good entrepreneur has the ability to sell others on their ideas. They get others excited by their vision, their belief and their enthusiasm.

Risk. Entrepreneurs are risk-takers. They’re not reckless; they take calculated risks. Security isn’t something they need. They know that in life, there’s no real security-only opportunity.

Entrepreneurs are made, not born. To paraphrase Zig Ziglar, we’ve never seen where an entrepreneur was born, but we’ve seen where they’ve died. So, somewhere between birth and death, by choice or by training, they became an entrepreneur.

And so can you. By developing an entrepreneurial spirit, you’ll become more successful, whether in your own business or someone else’s organization. Your value will increase, your income will rise, and you will succeed.

If you are looking to reach your goals you must develop one that motivates you toward achieving the results. Writing and setting the goal is not enough if you are not inspired to be successful. Here are some pointers that can assist you in goal setting.

Coming from the machining world, we were always faced with challenges for improving business. Usually these were centered on an area that was negatively impacting our performance. So we would be tasked with indentifying the issue and resolving it using various tools, one of which is the Y Diagram.

The Y Diagram can also be used to find your real goal purpose and to assist in it’s achievement.

Let’s use weight loss as our goal, for an example, and you are trying to get rid of those unwanted pounds. Start the process by asking why it is important for you to reach the goal. Maybe you just want to fit in your favorite pair of jeans again or a swim suit, but for most there is not enough desire to move toward that goal.

To find the inspiration to keep moving we have to dive deeper into your desire for the success. We need to discover why the fitting into the jeans is so important. Ask yourself why they are important. Will the jeans signify reaching your ideal weight again?

Is your confidence waning because of the extra weight? Or maybe you just want to improve you personal relationship with a leaner, sexier body. Finding the root of the issue will help you to find the driving emotion that will push you further.

Until you move past the visual impact of the jeans and find the root of your desire you are not going to be motivated. Goals without emotional impact are hard to achieve.

Practicing goal setting is very important. It’s significance is usually underrated by most people. When you have a target to achieve, it helps you focus on important things, take action and prevent taking unnecessary actions.

A wise man once said ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail’.

Differentiating between end goals and mean goals when doing goal setting is very important. End goals is what you ultimately want to achieve or get. While mean goals, as it’s name suggests, are used as means to attain end goals. Anytime when we set goals, we must ensure that we are setting end goals not mean goals.

For example, let’s take the common goal of wanting to be rich. This is an example of a mean goal and not end goal. Think about it, what you ultimately want is not more green paper or higher numbers in your bank account balance. What you are seeking for is actually happiness, security, freedom etc which you think money can give you.

Sadly many people fail to see that and got caught out by it. They try hard to amass more wealth but eventually still end up unsatisfied. This is because they did not get what they ultimately wanted. All this because they put their focus on the wrong goal.

Here is a common story. A young man starts his career in a large corporation with hopes and dreams of making it big someday. He hopes that by earning big money he will have happiness, freedom and security. So he spends the next 20 years working hard to become CEO. He finally achieves it but in the process of getting there, he had to sacrifice his happiness, freedom and time. And even after he becomes CEO he is still as busy and stressed as ever.

So although he finally achieved his goal, he found out that it did not give him what he wanted.

To set a goal, sacrifice for it and finally achieve it, only to find out too late that it didn’t give you what you initially wanted. That is a very bitter pill to swallow.

So make sure that you don’t make the mistake of thinking mean and end goals are the same. When setting goals, do it thoroughly and take your time. Make sure you get it right.

3. Short term and long term ” Whatever the goal you are setting, make sure that you set both long and short term goals for it. Your long term goal is typically the ultimate desired outcome whereas short term goals are the stages or steps that you need to do to achieve the long term goal.

4. Schedule ” Always schedule your goals. Set a timeline for the achievement of both your long and short term goals. Also, set schedules for taking action, or performing certain tasks that are related to achieving the goals.

5. Review your goals ” After setting a goal, remember to consistently review it. How far have you come? Hows the progress? This practice of reviewing goals will help motivate you, as you will naturally be excited when you see your progress. Furthermore, it gives you a complete perspective as to whether you are headed in the right direction or not.

6. Be decisive ” Be decisive in your goal setting. Dont frequently change your mind about a goal and about the approach that you will take to achieve it. Stick to a goal after you have set it. Only change decisions when you are entirely sure that the current goal or appraoch is ineffective.

7. Reward & celebrate - Remember to reward yourself and celebrate when you have achieved a goal. Always reward yourself whenever you achieved a short term goal, and have a full on celebration when you achieve your long term goals.

8. Take action ” Always take some form of action immediately after you finish doing the goal setting. Why is this so important? It is important because this keeps up the momentum and excitement. Youve started the ball rolling by setting the goal, now keep it going through taking immediate action.

I got up this morning and didn’t turn on the television, or read the newspapers. Wow, only 38 days to go. (I don’t know if I can make it, and a diet would be easier.) I mean, I could go 40 days without BBQ, or even steak, but this…this is a tough one, especially with all the talking and proposing the Democratic Party is doing.

Essentially, they are going to put an end to the economic juncture, and lead in government health care by taxing 2% of the population, and they are those who annually earn more than $250 grand. They are taking away tax deductions such as mortgage interests and charitable giving.

This proposal is going to have the Mel Brooks’ History of the World Part I effect, Where Mel Brooks was asked about the poor, and he mordaciously answered, “The Poor? Screw the poor!”

Charities that do a good job day in and out on the contribution of those with good bread (meaning those who make over $250 grand a year) will crunch to a screaming halt under this imbecilic proposal. And this has been since the start a part of the Obamessiah plan. We’re always taught that charity begins at home, but under the Obama proposal, charity will become a government’s work. And it will hail with all types of strings attached, which is not the case now.

And the Government healthcare? Well with Clinton administration it was thought to be a catastrophe, and it’s going to be even a bigger adversity now. Just wait and you’ll see the flaw when you have to sit in a government run waiting room, you’ll get to see people who can never be fired for being incompetent or for some fishy reason.

The Republicans had better start getting their butts in gear now, and start fighting, even if the next election is two years away. The issues are much clearer now that Obama and the Democratic Party are laying them out.

Clinton had his bell rung in the off year election, and it’s time to start fighting Obama and his team of idiots. This is The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight, stealing a line from the late great Jimmy Breslin, even though he was a Democrat. ( But he wasn’t a member of the current Democratic Party)

We’ll see if I can do forty days. I will give it an old college try though.
