A Dermatologist’s Challenge
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009Dermatologists do much more than treat acne and scars. Skin cancers are a particular area where awareness has increased dramatically in recent years and demand for services from dermatologists has increased with it. For many people, a mole or freckle on their body can become a life threatening mark that requires immediate diagnosis.
Other procedures a dermatologist might be involved with include laser hair removal, hair transplant surgery, tattoo removal and even face lifts. If it seems as though some of these procedures would be more suited to plastic surgeons, the truth is that many doctors do cross lines of speciality sometimes. Botox is an area many doctors are moving into because it’s a relatively easy process with a huge market that continues to grow.
Moles and freckles are a very common condition that dermatologists will be asked to check as skin cancer awareness increases. It’s also a result of a swing in attitude towards personal health, as more people decide to be pro-active and find potential threats to their health before they get out of control. Melanoma is a real problem in young adults and can so easily lead to death if not treated early.
If you think you may need to see a dermatologist but don’t know where to start your primary care physician can refer you to a dermatologist. Your doctor may want to perform a brief examination before he or she makes the referral but once that is done your doctor should be able to recommend someone appropriate.
Doing a little research can also uncover more serious concerns, like if the doctor has had any malpractice suits or complaints against him or her in the past. While not all doctors will have such problems with the law, it is always better to know if your dermatologist has had any legal problems before you start receiving treatments.
The number of skin conditions is huge and no dermatologist will ever be able to say they have had to treat them all. Dermatologists perform a very important role in medicine, especially with so many instances of skin cancer like melanoma. If you do have any concerns like a freckle or mole that has changed shape or color, you should immediately arrange for a consultation with a doctor or dermatologist. Melanoma kills many people every year and there is no better medical professional to assist and advise sufferers than a dermatologist.
